Spring Cleaning Includes Your Website | 5 Places to Start

When your website first launched it was most likely a simple place with the core information needed about your business. Fast-forward a few years, and many business owners find their site is bloated with content and promotions added slowly month after month. It’s not the most fun job, but cleaning out your website every once in a while is as necessary as cleaning out your house. Trust us, you’ll feel better after you do!

 

Old Banners, Ads & Graphics

You spent all month making that Valentine’s Day promo banner, but did you remember to take it down in March? Start your website cleaning by looking over all of the images on each page to remove anything outdated or no longer applicable.

Dead Videos & Links

Something as simple as renaming a file can make videos and other linkable content fall apart. Next in your quest to clean, click on everything clickable on each page of your site to make sure everything functions as you originally intended. This should include looking for slow-loading items bogging down your site load time as well.

Store Items No Longer Available

If your website includes a shop, review the items and pricing to make sure everything is still available and accurate. This can also apply to businesses offering services. Is everything mentioned on your site still available for the price listed?

Confirmation Pages on Sales & Email Signups

We recommend that our clients go through any sales or sign-up process on their site to see what they typed in there a year or so ago. This will tell you if the online sales process functions properly … better yet, it will tell you if that process is annoying for your customers (a potential reason for abandoned carts).

Content Hoarding

How many pages did you add last year? Does your menu bar look more like a word cloud? Think about minimizing some of these pages that can be told together, or better yet, replace other things.

Bonus Tip:  The Mobile View

Since people do most web work on a desktop computer, often that’s the only place business owners will check to make sure their site looks good and functions well. However, 90% of your audience is going to interact with your site at least once on a mobile device (Android/iPhone smartphones and tablets), don’t you want to make sure that mobile experience is just as pleasant? Most website templates are not automatically mobile optimized so you may have more work to do before you can say your site is finished.
